How to Apply for a PAN Card Online — e-PAN & Form 49A

A PAN (Permanent Account Number) is essential for filing taxes, opening a bank account, and most financial transactions. You can apply for a PAN online in a few ways — through the authorised issuers or via instant e-PAN using Aadhaar. This guide walks through how to apply for a PAN card online.

Ways to apply for a PAN online

  • Instant e-PAN (free, via Aadhaar): on the Income Tax e-Filing portal, if your Aadhaar is linked to a mobile — get an e-PAN in minutes.
  • Protean (NSDL) — Form 49A: apply online, upload documents or use Aadhaar e-KYC/e-Sign; a physical card is dispatched.
  • UTIITSL: the other authorised issuer, with a similar online application.

Use Form 49A for Indian citizens and Form 49AA for foreign citizens. TAXAJ can handle your PAN application for individuals and entities.

Instant e-PAN via Aadhaar (step by step)

  1. Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal → Instant e-PAN → Get New e-PAN.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar and validate with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  3. Confirm your details; the e-PAN is generated and can be downloaded as a PDF (free).

Applying via Protean/UTIITSL (with documents)

  1. Fill Form 49A/49AA online with personal details.
  2. Provide proof of identity, address and date of birth (and a photograph) — Aadhaar e-KYC can auto-fill many fields.
  3. Pay the fee, submit, and note the acknowledgement to track status. A physical PAN card is delivered by post.

Documents commonly needed

Proof of identity, address and date of birth (Aadhaar covers all three for most applicants), plus a photograph for physical-card applications.
