Selection Guide

How to Select the Right MCA Industrial Activity Code

Selecting the wrong industrial activity code is a common mistake during SPICe+ and FiLLiP filing. Since the code becomes permanent in the CIN for companies, it's critical to choose correctly before submitting the incorporation form.

🏭

Step 1: Identify Principal Activity

Identify the main revenue-generating activity your company will undertake. For multi-activity businesses, select the activity expected to contribute the dominant share of revenue in the first 2 financial years.

🔍

Step 2: Search the Code

Use the Industrial Activity Code finder above. Search by keyword (e.g. "software", "manufacturing", "consulting") to find matching 2-digit division codes. Review the descriptions to match your business.

💼

Step 3: Business Code (if applicable)

Only fill the Business / Profession Code if income is primarily from a profession (doctor, CA, lawyer) or regulated business (insurance, stockbroking). Leave blank for general trade/manufacturing.

Step 4: Verify Before Submission

Cross-check the selected code in the live SPICe+ form dropdown. For companies: code is permanent in CIN. TAXAJ's CA team verifies and selects the correct code as part of company registration.

MCA Industrial Activity Code — All FAQs

The MCA Industrial Activity Code is a 2-digit code published by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) representing the main division of a company's or LLP's primary business activity. It is a customised version of the National Industrial Classification (NIC) system. The code is mandatory in SPICe+ form for company registration and FiLLiP form for LLP registration. For companies, the selected code becomes part of the Corporate Identification Number (CIN) and cannot be changed after incorporation.
No. For companies, the Industrial Activity Code is embedded in the Corporate Identification Number (CIN) at characters 2–6 and cannot be changed after registration. Even if you alter your business objects via MGT-14 and MOA amendment, the CIN's activity code remains unchanged. This is legally acceptable and common — many companies evolve their business activities while keeping the original CIN code. For LLPs, the code can be updated by filing with MCA. This is why TAXAJ's CA team carefully selects the correct code during company incorporation.
For IT and software companies, the correct MCA Industrial Activity Code is 62 — Computer Programming, Consultancy and Related Activities. This covers software development, IT consulting, SaaS, web development, mobile apps, data processing, and related tech services. For data hosting, cloud services, or internet portals, code 63 — Information Service Activities may also apply. TAXAJ registers IT companies with the correct NIC code as part of the company registration service.
For NBFC and financial services companies, the correct code is 64 — Financial Service Activities Except Insurance and Pension Funding. This includes NBFCs, investment companies, lending companies, and financial holding companies. Insurance companies use 65 — Insurance, Reinsurance and Pension Funding. Activities auxiliary to finance use 66. TAXAJ handles NBFC registration and can assist with the correct code selection.
The Industrial Activity Code is a 2-digit code representing the broad industry division and is mandatory for all companies and LLPs in SPICe+/FiLLiP. It becomes part of the CIN for companies. The Business / Profession Code is a separate field required only when the primary income is from a profession (doctor, CA, lawyer, architect) or specific regulated business (insurance agency, stockbroker). For general trading, manufacturing, or tech companies, the Business Code field is typically left blank or set to "Others".
The MCA Industrial Activity Codes are a simplified, customised version of NIC (National Industrial Classification) codes. NIC codes are detailed 5-digit codes (e.g., 62011 for custom software development) used for MSME registration, Udyam, and GST. MCA only requires the 2-digit Main Division code (e.g., 62 for all IT activities) at the company/LLP incorporation stage. For Udyam / MSME registration, you need the detailed NIC code — TAXAJ's Udyam registration service handles this.
For real estate and construction companies, the codes are: 41 — Construction of Buildings (residential and commercial construction, builders and developers), 42 — Civil Engineering (roads, infrastructure, bridges), 43 — Specialised Construction Activities (electrical, plumbing, finishing contractors). For real estate agencies and property dealing without construction, use 68 — Real Estate Activities. TAXAJ registers real estate companies with the appropriate MCA code — register here.
MCA asks only for one Main Division code representing the principal activity. For multi-activity startups: (1) Select the activity expected to generate the dominant revenue in the first 2 financial years, (2) If truly split equally, select the activity that is most regulated or most important for investor positioning, (3) Code 99 — Activities of Extraterritorial Organisations is not applicable; use "Others" (99) only if no specific code fits. Remember: you can change your business objects later via MCA forms, but the CIN code is permanent for companies. TAXAJ's CA team helps startups select the right code during registration.
About MCA Industrial Activity Codes

MCA Industrial Activity Code for Company & LLP Registration — Complete Guide

The MCA Industrial Activity Code is a mandatory 2-digit classification code required by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during company incorporation through SPICe+ (INC-32) and LLP registration through FiLLiP. Published by MCA as a customised and simplified version of the National Industrial Classification (NIC) 2008 system developed by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), these codes serve as the standardised identifier for a company's primary business activity in all government databases, regulatory filings, and statistical reports.

One of the most critical aspects of MCA Industrial Activity Code selection is its permanent embedding in the Corporate Identification Number (CIN) for companies. The CIN follows the format: U/L [5-digit activity code] [2-letter state] [year] [company type] [6-digit number]. Once a company is incorporated with a particular activity code, the CIN cannot be amended — making the initial selection a compliance decision with permanent consequences. This is why TAXAJ's CA and CS team carefully evaluates each client's business model before selecting the appropriate code during company registration or LLP registration.

Alongside the Industrial Activity Code, MCA also requires a Business / Profession Code for companies and LLPs whose primary income is from professional services. With 50+ profession-specific codes covering medical practice, engineering, CA firms, legal services, IT companies, insurance agencies, stockbrokers, and builders — this code helps MCA track and regulate sector-specific business activities. TAXAJ's free tool above covers both codes with instant search, mobile-friendly cards, and one-click copy — fixing the most common complaint about existing pages: "not visible on mobile."
