EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) is a retirement savings scheme managed by EPFO. It is mandatory for all establishments with 20 or more employees. Every employee earning up to ₹15,000/month in basic salary must mandatorily be enrolled. Those earning above ₹15,000 can be enrolled voluntarily.
EPFO has declared an interest rate of 8.25% per annum for FY 2025-26. Interest is calculated on the monthly running balance and credited to the account at the end of the financial year.
EPF interest is tax-free up to contributions of ₹2.5 lakh per year for salaried employees (₹5L for government employees). Interest earned on contributions above this threshold is taxable. The total maturity amount remains tax-free if you complete 5 continuous years of service.
Full withdrawal: On retirement (58 years), 2 months of unemployment, or permanent disability. Partial withdrawal: Allowed for medical emergency (up to 6× monthly wages), house purchase (up to 90% of balance), higher education, marriage, and home loan repayment — all with specific conditions and lock-in periods.
EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) is a savings-cum-retirement corpus where both employee and employer contribute — you get the lump sum on retirement. EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme) is funded only by the employer's 8.33% share (capped at ₹1,250/month) and provides a monthly pension post-retirement. You cannot withdraw EPS as a lump sum unless you have less than 10 years of service.
