What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the electronic equivalent of a physical signature in India. Issued by licensed Certifying Authorities (CAs) — such as eMudhra, NeSL and Capricorn — under the Information Technology Act, 2000, a DSC cryptographically binds your identity to a digital document, ensuring its authenticity and integrity.
In India, DSCs are stored on a USB crypto token (also called a dongle) that you plug into your computer when signing. The token contains your private key, which is mathematically linked to your public key on the certificate — making forgery impossible.
Since January 2021, the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) has discontinued Class 2 DSC. Today, only Class 3 DSC is issued in India — the highest security level — along with the specialised DGFT DSC for foreign trade portals.
Under Section 3 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, a digital signature has the same legal standing as a handwritten signature on any document. The DSC is regulated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) through the Controller of Certifying Authorities.
You plug in your USB crypto token and select a document to sign. Your private key (stored securely on the token) creates a unique digital fingerprint (hash) of the document.
The hash is encrypted with your private key, creating the digital signature. This signature is attached to the document along with your public key certificate.
The receiver (government portal / bank / court) uses your public key to decrypt the signature and verify the hash matches. If it matches, the signature is authentic and the document is unaltered.

How to Get Your DSC from TAXAJ
Submit Documents & Apply
Fill the TAXAJ DSC application form with your PAN, Aadhaar, email and mobile number. Upload scanned documents (or share via WhatsApp). Our team verifies immediately and initiates the application with the Certifying Authority.
e-KYC Video Verification
A brief video KYC call (via Aadhaar OTP or video verification) is conducted by the Certifying Authority to authenticate your identity. This is required under CCA guidelines. TAXAJ guides you through the process step by step.
DSC Token Issued & Dispatched
After KYC verification, the DSC is generated and programmed onto the USB crypto token. The token is dispatched via courier the same day (or next working day). Metro cities (Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai) get same-day / next-day delivery.
Register on Portals & Start Using
TAXAJ provides complete guidance on registering your DSC on MCA21, Income Tax, GST, EPFO, DGFT or whichever portal you need. Install the USB token driver and start signing immediately after registration.
📋 Documents Required for DSC
For most Individual DSC applications, TAXAJ uses Aadhaar-based OTP e-KYC — no physical document submission required. Simply verify via OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile. Physical verification is needed only for DGFT DSC and some Organisation DSC types.

Everything You Need to Know About DSC in India
A comprehensive reference on Digital Signature Certificates — legal framework, validity, uses, common mistakes, and practical guidance.
Legal Framework — IT Act 2000 & CCA
Digital Signature Certificates in India are governed by the Information Technology Act, 2000, specifically Section 3 (electronic signatures) and Sections 35–39 (licensing of Certifying Authorities). The Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), licenses and regulates all DSC issuers. Currently licensed CAs include eMudhra, NeSL (National e-Governance Services Ltd), Capricorn, NSDL e-Gov, Pantasign, and (n)Code Solutions. A DSC issued by any licensed CA is legally valid across all government portals and courts in India.
DSC Validity — 1 Year vs 2 Years
DSCs are issued with a validity of 1 year or 2 years from the date of issuance. After expiry, the DSC cannot be used for signing — you need to apply for a fresh DSC (renewal). TAXAJ recommends choosing a 2-year DSC to reduce the hassle and cost of annual renewal. Set a calendar reminder 30 days before expiry to avoid disruption to MCA filings, GST filings or e-Tender submissions. Note: if your DSC expires during a critical filing period (like MCA annual filing deadline), it can cause significant delays and attract late fees.
DSC Renewal — What You Need to Know
DSC renewal does not extend your existing certificate — it creates a brand new certificate. The existing USB token may or may not be reusable depending on whether it has space for a new certificate. Many providers issue a fresh token on renewal. You must update the renewed DSC on all government portals (MCA, GST, EPFO etc.) after renewal. TAXAJ handles the entire renewal process — from document re-verification to portal re-registration. Contact us at least 30 days before expiry to avoid any disruption to your business filings.
DSC for Company Incorporation — MCA21
Every director of a Private Limited Company, LLP partner, or authorised signatory must have a valid Class 3 Individual DSC to file on the MCA21 portal. The DSC is mandatory for: company incorporation via SPICe+ (INC-32), LLP incorporation via FiLLiP, annual returns (AOC-4, MGT-7), director changes (DIR-12), MOA/AOA amendments, and all digitally signed MCA forms. The DSC must be registered on MCA21 before use — TAXAJ handles this registration as part of the DSC delivery service.
DGFT DSC vs Regular DSC — The Key Difference
A common mistake made by importers and exporters: buying a regular Class 3 DSC and expecting it to work on the DGFT portal for IEC registration or Customs filings. The DGFT portal uses a different certificate authority configuration — only a specifically issued DGFT DSC works on this portal. Regular Class 3 DSC (for MCA, Income Tax etc.) will not work. If you are an importer/exporter, you need both: a regular Class 3 DSC (for MCA, GST) AND a separate DGFT DSC (for IEC, Customs). TAXAJ supplies both types.
e-KYC: How to Get DSC Fastest
The fastest way to get an Individual DSC in India today is via Aadhaar OTP e-KYC — no physical documents, no physical visit required. You need: PAN card, Aadhaar number, and a mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. The entire process — application, OTP verification, DSC generation — takes under 2 hours. For Organisation DSC and DGFT DSC, a short video verification call is required, but still no physical document submission. TAXAJ completes the e-KYC process on your behalf and delivers the USB token to your door — all within the same business day.
Class 2 DSC was discontinued by CCA in January 2021. Any provider still selling "Class 2 DSC" is either selling old/expired stock or is unscrupulous. Only Class 3 DSC is valid in India today.
A standard Class 3 DSC will not work on the DGFT portal. You need a separately issued DGFT DSC for IEC registration, RCMC, and Customs filings. Order the right type upfront.
Receiving a DSC token doesn't automatically enable it. You must register the DSC on each portal (MCA21, GST, Income Tax) before you can use it for signing. TAXAJ guides you through this.
An expired DSC cannot sign any document. MCA, GST and Income Tax filing deadlines don't get extended because your DSC expired. Renew at least 30 days before expiry.
