GST Login: How to Log In to gst.gov.in (and Fix It When You Cannot)
The GST portal at gst.gov.in is where every registered taxpayer manages registration, returns, payments, refunds and notices. Logging in is straightforward. What is not straightforward is what to do when it refuses to let you in — which is why most people are reading this page.
The login steps are below, followed by the fixes for every common failure.
How to log in to the GST portal
- Go to www.gst.gov.in and click Login in the top-right corner.
- Enter your username and password.
- Enter the characters shown in the image.
- Click Login. You land on your dashboard.
Your username is not your GSTIN. It is the username you created at first login. This is the single most common reason a login fails.
First-time login
If you have just been granted registration, you received a provisional ID or GSTIN and a temporary password. Use the First time login link on the login page rather than the normal one, enter those credentials, and you will be prompted to set your own permanent username and password.
Do this promptly. Temporary credentials expire, and recovering them takes longer than setting them up.
Forgot your username or password
- Forgot password: click the link, enter your username, and reset it using the OTP sent to your registered mobile and email.
- Forgot username: use the Forgot Username link and enter your GSTIN. The username is sent to the registered email.
Both routes depend entirely on the mobile number and email registered against the GSTIN. If those have changed, neither will work — see below.
Login not working: what is actually wrong
Invalid username or password
Check that you are entering the username, not the GSTIN or the email address. Check that Caps Lock is off. If you have tried several times, reset rather than guessing again — repeated failures lock the account.
OTP not received
The OTP goes to the mobile and email registered against the GSTIN, which is often the accountant’s or a former employee’s, not yours. Check spam. Wait a full minute before requesting another, because a rapid second request can invalidate the first.
If the registered contact details are genuinely out of date, the OTP will never arrive. Updating them requires a non-core amendment to the registration, and if the authorised signatory has left the business you may need to change that first. This is the situation that most often needs professional help, and it is worth fixing before a return deadline rather than on one.
Account locked
Multiple wrong attempts lock the account temporarily. Wait, then use Forgot Password rather than attempting again.
System error, or please try again later
Usually genuine portal load, and it peaks in the days before the 11th and the 20th of each month. Try outside business hours. If it persists across days and browsers, it is not load.
The page will not load or behaves strangely
Clear the cache, try a private window, and try a different browser. The portal is most reliable in recent Chrome or Firefox. Disable ad-blockers and script blockers for the site.
DSC not detected when signing
This is not a login problem. The signing utility must be running, the token drivers installed, and the certificate registered against the correct PAN. Our guides to registering a DSC and installing and troubleshooting the signing utility cover the same class of failure.
You can log in, but the registration shows as suspended or cancelled
Login works; the registration does not. This usually follows a run of unfiled returns. It needs revocation of cancellation, which is time-barred — the sooner it is filed the better. See revocation of GST cancellation.
A word on security
The only official portal is https://www.gst.gov.in. Check the address bar before entering credentials. There is no fee to log in, no fee to reset a password, and no government officer will ever telephone you asking for your GST password or an OTP.
Sharing portal credentials over WhatsApp is common practice and a bad idea. If a consultant needs access, they should be added properly as an authorised signatory so that access can be withdrawn cleanly when the engagement ends.
What you can do once you are in
- File GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and the annual return
- Make payments and generate challans — see how to pay GST online, and Form PMT-09 if a payment landed in the wrong head
- Claim refunds and track their status
- View and reply to notices
- Amend registration details
- Download your registration certificate
If your position for the period is nil, you may not need the portal at all — a nil return can be filed by SMS.
Frequently asked questions
What is the GST portal login website?
The official portal is www.gst.gov.in. Click Login at the top right.
Is my GSTIN my username?
No. The username is the one you created at first login. The GSTIN is only used for first-time login and for username recovery.
How do I log in for the first time?
Use the First time login link with the provisional ID or GSTIN and the password issued to you, then set your own username and password.
What if I forgot my GST password?
Use Forgot Password, enter your username, and reset it with the OTP sent to the registered mobile and email.
What if the registered mobile number is no longer in use?
The OTP cannot reach you, so no self-service reset will work. The registration has to be amended to change the contact details or the authorised signatory. Take advice on this rather than making repeated attempts.
Is there any fee to log in or reset a password?
No. Both are free. Anyone charging you for either is not the government.
Or stop logging in altogether
Most businesses do not want a GST portal login. They want their returns filed correctly and on time.
We hold the credentials, reconcile input tax credit before filing rather than after a notice, file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B on schedule, and deal with the portal on your behalf — including the amendments and revocations that self-service cannot fix.
