GST on Health & Fitness Services — Gyms, Wellness & Healthcare

Gyms, fitness studios, wellness centres, yoga studios and health clubs provide taxable services under GST — but there’s an important line between taxable fitness/wellness services and exempt healthcare services. This guide explains how GST applies to the health and fitness sector. (Confirm the current rate/exemptions before invoicing.)

GST on gyms & fitness services

Membership and services of gyms, fitness centres and health clubs are taxable, generally at the standard 18% rate. The establishment charges 18% GST on memberships/packages once registered, and can claim input tax credit on eligible inputs (equipment, rent, etc.).

Exempt healthcare vs taxable wellness

GST exempts healthcare services provided by a clinical establishment, authorised medical practitioner or paramedics (diagnosis/treatment of illness). This exemption does not automatically extend to wellness, fitness, spa, cosmetic or beauty services, which are generally taxable. So a physiotherapy treatment by a clinical establishment may be exempt, while a gym membership or a spa package is taxable.

Registration & compliance

  • Register for GST once turnover crosses the threshold, or earlier for inter-state/e-commerce supplies.
  • Classify each offering correctly — taxable fitness/wellness vs any genuinely exempt healthcare component.
  • Issue GST-compliant invoices for memberships and packages, and file returns.
