Renewed Your DSC? Re-register It on MCA, GST, Income Tax, TRACES and EPFO
A renewed Digital Signature Certificate is a new certificate, not an extension of the old one — so every portal that knew your old DSC has to be told about the new one. The person, the PAN and the DIN are unchanged, but the certificate carries a new key and serial number, and each portal checks the certificate it has on record. Skipping this step is the most common reason a filing fails in the week after a renewal, usually with a message that blames something else.
The checklist
| Portal | What to do with the new DSC | Signing utility | Step-by-step guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| MCA V3 | Register (associate) the new certificate against your DIN or PAN | emSigner for MCA | Register a DSC on MCA |
| GST portal | Register / Update DSC for the authorised signatory, choosing Update | emSigner (GSTN) | GST emSigner guide |
| Income tax e-filing | Register DSC again from My Profile — the portal supports re-registration whether or not the old DSC has expired | emBridge | Register a DSC on the income tax portal |
| TRACES / TDS statements | Register the new certificate for the authorised signatory before signing the next statement | TRACES signer | Signing TDS returns with a DSC |
| EPFO employer portal | Register the employer’s new DSC and get it approved | EPFO signer utility | EPF employer DSC registration |
Do the portals you file on most often first. For a company director that is usually MCA and GST; for a deductor, TRACES before the next quarterly statement.
Three utilities, not one
“emSigner” is used loosely for every signing tool, but the portals use different ones, and they run side by side on the same computer:
- MCA uses emSigner for MCA, listening on https://127.0.0.1:2015 — see our emSigner for MCA installation and troubleshooting guide.
- GST uses its own emSigner, listening on https://127.0.0.1:1585 — see fixing “Failed to establish connection to the server”.
- Income tax uses emBridge, downloaded from the e-filing portal’s DSC Management Utility page.
Renewing the DSC does not require reinstalling any of them. If one stopped working at the same time as the renewal, the cause is almost always the registration, not the utility.
Before you start
- Read the name on the new certificate and compare it, character by character, with the name held against your DIN or PAN. A mismatch that the old certificate happened not to have will now fail on MCA.
- Check which certificate you are selecting. A token can hold the expired certificate and the new one side by side. Pick the one with the new validity dates.
- Keep the token PIN handy. Most renewals arrive on a new token with a new PIN; three wrong attempts can lock it. Our DSC USB token guide covers resets.
Errors that really mean “register the new DSC”
- MCA: “DSC not registered with MCA” or “Digital signature verification failed. Please affix a valid DSC”.
- GST: the signing step fails although emSigner is running and the token is detected.
- Income tax: the return or form cannot be verified with the DSC, even though the token works elsewhere.
Renewing, or need it done?
TAXAJ issues and renews Class 3 digital signature certificates and registers them on MCA, GST and the income tax portal as part of our annual ROC filing and GST work, so a renewal never lands in the middle of a due date.
