Difference Between Signing-Only and Sign+Encrypt DSC

When buying a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), you’ll be asked whether you want a “Sign only” certificate or a “Sign + Encrypt” (combo) certificate. The difference matters because each serves a distinct purpose. This guide explains signing-only vs signing-with-encryption DSC.

Signing DSC (Sign only)

A signing certificate is used to digitally sign documents and forms — it proves the signer’s identity and that the document hasn’t been altered. This is what you use for filings like MCA/ROC forms, GST, income-tax returns, EPFO and e-signing PDFs. For most compliance work, a signing DSC is all you need.

Encryption DSC

An encryption certificate is used to encrypt data so that only the intended recipient can read it — it protects confidentiality rather than proving identity. It is mainly required in e-tendering, e-procurement and e-bidding portals, where bid documents must be encrypted.

Sign + Encrypt (combo) DSC

A combo certificate contains both a signing and an encryption certificate on the same token. It is the right choice if you participate in e-tenders/e-procurement (which need encryption) as well as normal signing. If you only file statutory forms, a signing-only DSC is sufficient and cheaper.

Which one should you buy?

  • Only statutory filings (MCA, GST, IT, EPFO): Sign-only DSC.
  • E-tendering / e-procurement participation: Sign + Encrypt (combo) DSC.

All of these are typically issued as Class 3 certificates for organisations/individuals. TAXAJ helps you obtain the right Digital Signature Certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between signing and encryption DSC?

A signing DSC proves identity and signs documents; an encryption DSC encrypts data for confidentiality (mainly e-tendering).

Do I need an encryption certificate for MCA/GST filings?

No — statutory filings need a signing DSC. Encryption is needed mainly for e-procurement/e-tender portals.

What is a combo (Sign + Encrypt) DSC?

A single token carrying both a signing and an encryption certificate — useful if you do e-tendering in addition to normal signing.
