Lift License — Documents Required & Process

Installing and operating a lift (elevator) in a building requires a licence/registration under the relevant state Lift Act and Rules, granted by the state’s Electrical Inspectorate / Licensing authority. There are usually two stages — permission to erect and a licence to operate — and each needs a specific set of documents. This guide lists the documents typically required. (Requirements vary by state — confirm with your state authority.)

Two stages of lift licensing

  • Permission to erect/install — approval before installing the lift, based on the design and drawings.
  • Licence to operate — issued after installation and inspection, permitting use of the lift; it is periodically renewed.

Documents commonly required

  • Application form prescribed by the state authority.
  • Building plan / approved plan and site details.
  • Lift drawings and technical specifications (car, machine room, shaft, load, speed).
  • Manufacturer’s details and test/guarantee certificate for the lift.
  • Proof of ownership of the building/premises and applicant identity/address proof.
  • Electrical load / supply details and, where required, an NOC from relevant authorities.
  • Installer/erector licence details and inspection reports.

Process in brief

  1. Apply for erection permission with drawings and documents to the state authority.
  2. Install the lift through a licensed installer.
  3. Get the lift inspected; on satisfactory inspection, obtain the licence to operate.
  4. Renew the licence periodically and keep up maintenance/inspection compliance.
