How to Check Your EPF / PF Balance in India (2026)

Your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) account holds a meaningful part of your retirement savings, and the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) makes it simple to review the balance at any time. As of 2026, you can check your PF balance through four reliable channels: the EPFO member passbook portal, the UMANG mobile app, an SMS, and a missed call. This guide explains each method and what you need before you begin.

Before you begin: prerequisites

All four methods depend on your Universal Account Number (UAN) being active and correctly linked to your details. Please confirm the following first:

  • Your UAN is allotted by your employer and activated on the EPFO portal.
  • Your mobile number is registered against your UAN, as most services send information to this number.
  • Your UAN is seeded with your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account, which is required for the SMS and missed-call facilities to return your balance.

If your UAN is not yet activated, you can activate it on the EPFO member portal using your UAN, mobile number and a one-time password before proceeding.

Method 1: EPFO member passbook portal

The member passbook portal offers the most detailed view of your account, including month-wise contributions from both you and your employer, interest credited, and your establishment (Member ID) details.

  1. Open a web browser and go to the EPFO member passbook portal at passbook.epfindia.gov.in.
  2. Enter your UAN, your password and the displayed captcha, then sign in.
  3. Once logged in, select the Member ID for which you wish to view the passbook. If you have changed jobs, you may see more than one Member ID linked to a single UAN.
  4. View the passbook on screen, where opening balance, contributions, interest and closing balance are shown. You may also download it for your records.

Please note that a newly activated UAN can take a few hours before the passbook becomes available, and the passbook typically reflects contributions after they are reconciled by the EPFO.

Method 2: UMANG app

UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is the Government of India’s single app for many public services, including EPFO. It is convenient if you prefer checking your balance on a mobile device.

  1. Download and install the UMANG app from your device’s app store, then register or log in using your mobile number and an OTP.
  2. Search for EPFO or select it from the list of services.
  3. Under Employee Centric Services, choose View Passbook.
  4. Enter your UAN. An OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your UAN.
  5. Enter the OTP to authenticate, then select the relevant Member ID to view your passbook and current balance.

Because authentication depends on the OTP, this method works only when your registered mobile number is active and reachable.

Method 3: Check balance by SMS

If you do not have internet access, an SMS gives you your latest balance and last contribution details quickly. This service works only from the mobile number registered with your UAN.

  1. Open the messaging app on the phone whose number is registered with your UAN.
  2. Compose a new message with the text EPFOHO UAN ENG, where ENG requests the reply in English.
  3. Send the message to 7738299899.
  4. You will receive a reply showing your available PF balance and the details of your last contribution.

The service supports several languages. To receive the information in a language other than English, replace ENG with the first three letters of your preferred language, for example HIN for Hindi, MAR for Marathi, TEL for Telugu, TAM for Tamil, GUJ for Gujarati, KAN for Kannada, MAL for Malayalam, PUN for Punjabi or BEN for Bengali.

Method 4: Check balance by missed call

The missed-call facility is the quickest option and does not cost you a call, as the line disconnects automatically after a couple of rings.

  1. From the mobile number registered with your UAN, dial 9966044425.
  2. Allow the call to disconnect on its own; you do not need to speak or wait.
  3. Within a short while, you will receive an SMS containing your Member ID, your last contribution and your total PF balance.

For this service to return your balance, your UAN should be seeded with at least one of your KYC details, such as your bank account, Aadhaar or PAN. If nothing is seeded, the reply may not display your balance.

A note on accuracy and timing

The balance shown through any of these channels reflects the contributions that have been received and reconciled by the EPFO. There can be a short lag between your employer depositing a contribution and it appearing against your account. Annual interest is credited by the EPFO once declared for the financial year, so your passbook is the most reliable place to confirm both contributions and interest over time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to remember my UAN to check my balance?

For the passbook portal and the UMANG app you must enter your UAN. For the SMS and missed-call services you do not type your UAN in the request, but your UAN must be active and linked to the mobile number you are using, as the system identifies you by that number.

Why am I not receiving an SMS after using the missed call or SMS service?

The most common reasons are that the mobile number you used is not the one registered with your UAN, that your UAN is not activated, or that your KYC details such as Aadhaar, PAN or bank account are not yet seeded. Confirming these details usually resolves the issue.

Is there any charge to check my EPF balance?

The EPFO does not charge a fee for any of these services. Standard SMS charges from your mobile operator may apply for the outgoing SMS, while the missed-call service is free of cost as the call ends before it connects.

What is the difference between the balance shown and my total PF corpus?

The figure returned by SMS or missed call is the balance recorded against your account at that point. The passbook, however, breaks this down into the employee share, employer share, pension contribution and interest, giving you a fuller picture of your total corpus.

Can I check the balance of a previous employer’s PF account?

Yes, if that account is linked to the same UAN, you can view each Member ID separately in the passbook portal or UMANG app. If a previous account is not linked or transferred, you may need to complete a transfer request so that all balances appear under a single UAN.
