Professional Tax Registration in Karnataka (2026)
Professional tax is a state-level levy on income earned from salaries, professions, trades and callings, and in Karnataka it is administered by the Commercial Taxes Department under the Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1976. Every employer and most self-employed persons operating in the state have obligations under this law, discharged online through the e-PRERANA portal. This guide explains the two certificates involved, the registration and enrolment process, the current slab, and the due dates that apply in 2026.
Enrolment (EC) versus registration (RC)
Karnataka professional tax works through two distinct certificates, and it is common for one entity to need both. Understanding the difference is the starting point for compliance.
Certificate of Enrolment (EC / PTEC)
The Certificate of Enrolment covers a person or business in its own capacity. Self-employed professionals, freelancers, sole proprietors, partnership firms, LLPs, companies and other establishments obtain an EC to pay professional tax on their own account. Enrolment is a once-only registration, after which the holder pays a fixed annual amount each year.
Certificate of Registration (RC / PTRC)
The Certificate of Registration applies where an entity employs staff. An employer uses the RC to deduct professional tax from the salaries and wages of employees who cross the taxable threshold and to remit that tax to the state on their behalf. A company with employees therefore typically holds both an EC (for the business itself) and an RC (in its role as an employer). New employers are required to apply for the RC within 30 days of becoming liable, generally the date the first employee is engaged.
Current professional tax slab in Karnataka
Following the amendment effective from the 2025-26 financial year, the slab for salaried and wage-earning individuals is straightforward and continues to apply in 2026.
- Monthly gross salary or wage up to Rs 25,000 — nil (exempt).
- Monthly gross salary or wage above Rs 25,000 — Rs 200 per month.
The annual liability for an employee above the threshold is capped at Rs 2,500, which is the statutory ceiling on professional tax across India. In practice this is collected as Rs 200 for eleven months and Rs 300 in the month of February, totalling Rs 2,500 for the year. The earlier lower slab that taxed salaries between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 has been removed, so employees earning up to Rs 25,000 a month now fall outside the levy entirely.
Enrolled persons (EC holders) pay a fixed annual amount specified in the schedule to the Act according to their category of profession, trade or calling. For most self-employed professionals and business entities the annual figure is Rs 2,500. The relevant schedule should be checked for the exact amount that applies to a particular class of enrolee.
The e-PRERANA portal process
All Karnataka professional tax registration, enrolment, payment and return filing is handled electronically through the e-PRERANA (Professions Tax Enrolment, Registration and Administration) system on the Commercial Taxes Department portal. The workflow below outlines the typical steps.
Applying for enrolment (EC)
- Open the e-PRERANA portal and select the enrolment option for new applicants.
- Complete the online enrolment application with the entity’s details, PAN, constitution, address and the nature of profession, trade or calling.
- Submit the application and note the acknowledgement generated by the system.
- On approval, the Certificate of Enrolment with the enrolment number is generated for download.
- Pay the annual enrolment tax online against the enrolment number.
Applying for employer registration (RC)
- Select the employer registration option on the portal and complete the online application.
- Provide employer details, PAN, constitution, place of business, date of commencement and the number of employees liable.
- Upload the supporting documents requested, such as PAN, proof of address and constitution documents.
- Submit the application for processing by the jurisdictional office.
- On approval, download the Certificate of Registration bearing the registration number, which is then used for all monthly remittances and returns.
Making payments and filing returns
- Log in and choose the payment option for either PTEC (enrolment) or PTRC (employer).
- Enter the enrolment or registration number and verify the pre-filled details.
- Select the assessment or return period and confirm the tax payable.
- Complete payment through net banking, UPI or card and save the challan.
- For employers, file the periodic return capturing the tax deducted and remitted for the period.
Due dates for 2026
Meeting the deadlines is as important as registering, because interest and penalties attach to late payment and non-filing.
- Annual enrolment (EC) payment — on or before 30 April each year. The professional tax for an enrolled person for the year is due by this date.
- Monthly employer (RC) remittance and return — by the 20th of the month following the month of deduction. Tax deducted from salaries in a given month must be deposited and reported by the 20th of the next month.
- Annual employer return — the annual statement in the prescribed form is filed by 30 April following the close of the year.
- New employer registration — within 30 days of becoming liable to deduct professional tax.
Employers should reconcile their payroll each month so that only employees drawing more than Rs 25,000 gross per month are deducted, and so that the February deduction correctly reflects the higher Rs 300 amount that brings the annual total to Rs 2,500.
Frequently asked questions
Does a company with no employees still need to register?
A company or firm without employees does not need an employer registration (RC), but it generally still requires enrolment (EC) to pay professional tax in its own capacity. Once it engages its first employee above the threshold, it must obtain the RC within 30 days.
Are employees earning below Rs 25,000 a month liable?
No. Under the current slab, monthly gross salary or wage up to Rs 25,000 is exempt, so no professional tax is deducted for such employees. The levy applies only where monthly gross remuneration exceeds Rs 25,000.
What is the maximum professional tax an individual pays in a year?
The maximum annual professional tax in Karnataka, as across India, is Rs 2,500. For a salaried employee above the threshold this is collected as Rs 200 for eleven months and Rs 300 in February.
Can enrolment and employer registration be done together?
Yes. An entity that both operates a business and employs staff applies for the EC in its own capacity and the RC as an employer through e-PRERANA. Many businesses complete both at the outset to stay fully compliant.
What happens if payment or a return is late?
Late payment attracts interest, and failure to register, pay or file returns can lead to penalties under the Act. Timely enrolment, monthly remittance by the 20th and the 30 April annual payment keep the account clean and avoid recovery action.
