BELATED AND REVISED RETURN AY 2026-27 — NEW 31 MARCH 2027 REVISION WINDOW EXPLAINED
INTRODUCTION
The transition to the Income Tax Act, 2025 has brought an important change in the timeline for revising an Income Tax Return. However, taxpayers filing the return for AY 2026-27 should note that this year continues to be governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961 because it relates to income earned during FY 2025-26.
One of the important changes applicable from AY 2026-27 is that the revised return window has been extended up to 31 March 2027, subject to the prescribed conditions. This gives taxpayers additional time to correct omissions or wrong statements in an already filed return.
WHAT IS THE LAST DATE FOR A BELATED RETURN FOR AY 2026-27?
A belated return is filed when the taxpayer misses the original due date for filing the return.
For AY 2026-27, a belated return can generally be filed up to 31 December 2026 or before completion of assessment, whichever is earlier.
Therefore, taxpayers who miss their applicable original ITR due date do not immediately lose the opportunity to file a return. They can still file a belated return within the prescribed period, subject to applicable late filing fees and interest.
LATE FILING FEE FOR BELATED RETURN
Filing a belated return may attract late filing fee under Section 234F of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
The fee is:
- ₹1,000 where total income does not exceed ₹5 lakh.
- ₹5,000 in other cases.
Interest may also be applicable depending on the taxpayer’s tax liability and the period of delay.
WHAT IS A REVISED RETURN?
A revised return allows a taxpayer to correct an omission or wrong statement in an original or belated return that has already been filed.
For example, a taxpayer may discover that interest income was missed, capital gains were incorrectly reported, or a TDS credit was not properly considered. Instead of leaving the error uncorrected, the taxpayer can file a revised return within the prescribed time.
The revised return replaces the earlier return for the purpose of processing, subject to the applicable provisions.
NEW 31 MARCH 2027 REVISION WINDOW
For AY 2026-27, the revised return can generally be filed up to 31 March 2027 or before completion of assessment, whichever is earlier.
This is an important change because the earlier framework generally required a revised return to be filed before the end of the relevant assessment year with the applicable statutory time limit.
The Income Tax Department has specifically clarified that for AY 2026-27, the revised return window extends up to 31 March 2027.
WHAT IF YOU FILE A REVISED RETURN AFTER 31 DECEMBER 2026?
This is an important point for taxpayers.
From AY 2026-27 onwards, a revised return filed after 31 December and up to 31 March of the relevant assessment year attracts an additional fee under Section 234-I.
For AY 2026-27, this means the additional fee applies from 1 January 2027.
The fee is:
- ₹1,000 if total income does not exceed ₹5 lakh.
- ₹5,000 if total income exceeds ₹5 lakh.
Therefore, 31 December 2026 is not the final date for revising the return. However, revising the return between 1 January 2027 and 31 March 2027 will involve the additional fee under Section 234-I.
BELATED RETURN VS REVISED RETURN
The two concepts should not be confused.
BELATED RETURN
A belated return is the first return filed after the original due date has been missed.
- For AY 2026-27 → Generally up to 31 December 2026.
- Late filing fee under Section 234F may apply.
REVISED RETURN
A revised return is filed to correct an omission or wrong statement in an already filed original or belated return.
- For AY 2026-27 → Up to 31 March 2027, subject to the prescribed conditions.
- Additional fee under Section 234-I applies when the revised return is filed after 31 December 2026.
EXAMPLE
Suppose a taxpayer files an ITR for AY 2026-27 on 20 August 2026.
Later, in November 2026, the taxpayer discovers that bank interest of ₹50,000 was not reported.
The taxpayer can file a revised return before 31 December 2026 without the additional Section 234-I fee.
If the same mistake is discovered in January 2027, the taxpayer can still revise the return up to 31 March 2027, subject to the additional fee under Section 234-I.
WHAT CAN BE CORRECTED THROUGH A REVISED RETURN?
A revised return can be useful where the taxpayer discovers an omission or incorrect statement such as:
- Income from interest or dividends was missed.
- Capital gains were reported incorrectly.
- TDS or TCS details were incorrectly claimed.
- Deduction or exemption details were incorrectly reported.
- Business or professional income was incorrectly computed.
- Rental income or house property details were missed.
- AIS, TIS, Form 26AS and the filed return do not reconcile.
Before filing the revised return, the taxpayer should review the entire computation rather than correcting only one figure.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
A revised return is not the same as an updated return.
A taxpayer should use the revised return facility where the law permits correction of an omission or wrong statement in an already filed return.
If the applicable revised-return window has expired, the taxpayer may need to consider whether an updated return or another available remedy is applicable, depending on the circumstances.
Taxpayers should also remember that the return for AY 2026-27 continues to be governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961 even though the Income Tax Act, 2025 has come into force from 1 April 2026.
CONCLUSION
The extension of the revised return window to 31 March 2027 gives taxpayers additional time to correct genuine mistakes in their AY 2026-27 return. However, taxpayers should not wait until the last date if an error is discovered earlier.
For AY 2026-27, a belated return can generally be filed up to 31 December 2026, while a revised return can generally be filed up to 31 March 2027, subject to completion of assessment and other applicable conditions.
Taxpayers revising their return after 31 December 2026 should also account for the additional fee under Section 234-I. Checking AIS, TIS, Form 26AS, bank statements, investment statements and other supporting documents before filing or revising the return can help ensure accurate tax compliance.
