How to Apply for a Ration Card Online in Delhi

A ration card is one of the most useful documents for a household in India — it serves as identity and residence proof and entitles eligible families to subsidised food grains and fuel. In Delhi you can apply for a ration card online through the e-District portal. This guide explains eligibility, documents and the online application process.

Why a ration card matters

A ration card is issued by the state government and doubles up as identity and residence proof. Below-poverty-line cardholders get subsidised wheat, rice, sugar and kerosene through fair-price shops, while above-poverty-line cards mainly serve as identification. A ration card is also accepted as supporting proof for domicile certificates, birth certificates and voter IDs.

Types of ration cards

Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards — issued to families below the poverty line, providing subsidies on food and fuel.

Above Poverty Line (APL) cards — typically white cards that mainly serve as an identity document.

Delhi issues cards under the National Food Security Act (AAY and priority household categories) based on eligibility.

Eligibility

To apply for a ration card in Delhi you should:

  • Be a permanent resident of Delhi
  • Not already hold, or have applied for, a ration card
  • Ensure no family member is listed on another ration card

Documents required

Keep ready the applicant’s Aadhaar card, proof of residence in Delhi, identity proof, a passport-size photograph of the head of the family, and details (Aadhaar) of all family members to be included.

How to apply for a ration card online in Delhi

  1. Visit the Delhi e-District portal at https://edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in
  2. Register as a new user using your Aadhaar or voter ID to create a login
  3. Log in and select the service Issuance of Ration Card under the Food & Supplies Department
  4. Fill the application form with the head of family and member details, and address
  5. Upload the required documents

Tracking and delivery

You can track the status of your application on the same e-District portal using your reference number. Once approved and verified, the ration card is issued and can be downloaded, and in many cases delivered to your address. Digital ration cards are more durable, harder to duplicate, and make fair-price-shop entitlements easier to track.
