Trademark Status Search — How to Check & What Statuses Mean

After filing a trademark application, you should regularly check its status on the IP India portal to know what stage it’s at and whether any action is needed. This guide shows how to do a trademark status search and what the common status terms mean.

How to check trademark status

  1. Go to the IP India online portal (ipindiaonline.gov.in) → Trade Marks → Trade Mark Status.
  2. Select “Application/Registered Trade Mark”, enter your application (TM) number, complete the captcha, and view the status.
  3. The page shows the current status, examination report, and important dates. You can also use the public trademark search to check similar marks.

What the status terms mean

  • New Application / Send to Vienna Codification — filed; figurative marks are being coded.
  • Formalities Chk Pass / Fail — basic filing formalities checked.
  • Marked for Exam — queued for examination by the examiner.
  • Objected — the examiner raised objections; you must file a reply to the examination report within the time limit.
  • Advertised / Accepted & Advertised — published in the Trade Marks Journal for opposition.
  • Opposed — a third party filed an opposition; you must respond.
  • Registered — the mark is registered; you can use the ® symbol.
  • Abandoned / Refused — the application lapsed (often due to no response) or was refused.

Why check status regularly

Trademark timelines are strict. If your mark is Objected or Opposed and you miss the response window, it can be abandoned. Regular status checks let you act in time. TAXAJ tracks your trademark at every stage.
