MSME / Udyam Registration — Benefits, Process & Eligibility 2026
Udyam Registration is the government’s single-window recognition for micro, small and medium enterprises in India. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar and EM-II systems, and it is now the only route to being formally classified as an MSME. The registration is free, entirely online, and issued on a self-declaration basis — but it is also the key that unlocks priority-sector lending, protection against delayed payments, subsidies and preference in government procurement. This guide covers who qualifies, how the classification works, the application process, and what to do once the certificate is issued.
What Udyam Registration is
Udyam is a permanent registration number issued by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises through the Udyam Registration portal. On completion you receive an e-certificate carrying a QR code that links back to the enterprise’s details. There is no paper application, no fee payable to the government, and no requirement to renew the registration.
The system is built on self-declaration but is not unverified: it draws directly on PAN, GST and income tax records to populate investment and turnover figures. That integration is why the details you declare must match what has actually been filed.
Who is eligible
Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing or in providing services can register — proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, private and public companies, co-operative societies, Hindu undivided families, trusts and self-help groups all qualify. Traders were historically excluded but retail and wholesale trade has since been brought within the framework for the limited purpose of priority-sector lending.
An enterprise files one Udyam Registration covering all its activities. Multiple manufacturing or service activities are added as lines within the same registration rather than as separate numbers.
How the micro, small and medium classification works
Classification rests on two composite criteria applied together: investment in plant, machinery and equipment, and annual turnover. An enterprise must satisfy both limits for a category; if it exceeds either, it moves up to the next tier. Export turnover is excluded when computing the turnover figure, which materially helps export-oriented units stay within a lower category.
The specific investment and turnover limits for micro, small and medium are notified by the Ministry and have been revised more than once. Rather than working from a figure that may be out of date, check the limits currently in force on our MSME Udyam registration page before you assess your category. Reclassification, where an enterprise crosses a threshold, follows the graduation and reverse-graduation rules set out in the notification — it is not immediate in either direction.
Documents and information needed
- Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or an authorised signatory of the company or LLP
- PAN of the enterprise, and GSTIN where the enterprise is required to be registered under GST
- Bank account details of the enterprise
- Details of the principal and additional units, NIC codes for the activities carried on, and the number of persons employed
No documents are uploaded. The portal pulls investment and turnover data from linked PAN and GST records, so figures do not need to be typed in or evidenced — which also means an enterprise that has not filed returns will find its data incomplete.
The registration process
The process is short. Visit the Udyam Registration portal and choose the option for new entrepreneurs. Enter the Aadhaar number and the name as it appears on Aadhaar, and validate through OTP. Then enter the PAN of the enterprise and validate it, at which point the system fetches the linked tax data. Complete the enterprise details — address, bank account, NIC activity codes, employment numbers — and submit with a final OTP. The certificate is generated and emailed, and can be printed from the portal at any time thereafter.
Registrations under the earlier Udyog Aadhaar system are no longer valid and holders need to register afresh under Udyam.
What the registration actually gets you
The benefits fall into a few groups:
- Access to credit — MSME status brings loans within the priority-sector lending framework, with collateral-free credit available under the guarantee scheme for eligible borrowers
- Protection on payments — buyers are required to settle MSME invoices within the period prescribed under the MSMED Act, with interest payable on delay, and disputes can be taken to the Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Council
- Public procurement preference — reserved quotas and exemptions from earnest money deposit in government tenders
- Scheme access — eligibility for central and state subsidy schemes, technology upgradation support and reimbursement of certain certification costs
The delayed-payment protection is, for most small suppliers, the single most valuable feature — but it only applies if the buyer knows you are a registered MSME, so cite the Udyam number on your invoices and in your contracts.
After registration: updating and staying compliant
The registration does not expire, but details must be updated on the portal when they change, and enterprises are expected to keep their PAN and GST filings current since the classification is refreshed from those records each year. Failure to update can lead to the registration being suspended. If your enterprise crosses a threshold, the change in status flows through automatically on the basis of filed data rather than requiring a fresh application.
Udyam sits alongside your other business registrations rather than replacing any of them. Most enterprises will also need GST registration, payroll registrations once they hire, and — if incorporated — the annual company filings covered in our guide to ROC annual filing for private limited companies. If you are still at the setup stage, our note on company incorporation cost in India sets out what to budget for.
Frequently asked questions
Is there any fee for Udyam Registration?
No. Registration on the official portal is free and no documents are uploaded. Third-party sites charging a fee for the registration itself are not operating an official channel — see our Udyam registration service page for what a professional engagement legitimately covers.
Do I need GST registration to get an Udyam number?
GSTIN is required only where the enterprise is liable to be registered under GST law. Enterprises exempt from GST registration can complete Udyam registration on PAN alone.
Does the Udyam certificate need renewal?
No. It is permanent. Details must, however, be kept updated on the portal, and the classification is recalculated annually from your filed PAN and GST data.
Can traders register under Udyam?
Retail and wholesale traders can register, but their status is recognised for the limited purpose of priority-sector lending rather than for the full range of MSME scheme benefits available to manufacturers and service providers.
