​Documents Required for PAN Card

PAN requires two types of documents. Proof of address and Proof of Identity. Any two of the following documents should meet the criteria in following Identities case:

Individual ApplicantAadhaar, Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence.

HUF - An affidavit of the HUF issued by the head of HUF along with POI/POA details

CompanyCertificate of Registration issued by Registrar of Companies

Partnership Firm/ LLP - Certificate of Registration issued by the Registrar of Firms/ Limited Liability Partnerships and Partnership Deed.

TrustCopy of Trust Deed or a copy of the Certificate of Registration Number issued by a Charity Commissioner.

Can PAN card be made online?

Yes. PAN can be made online through the following steps:

  • Visiting the official PAN – NSDL/UTIITSL website
  • Fill the form 49A or 49AA for (Indian/Foreigner) with your details.
  • Submit the required documents.
  • Pay the processing fee.
  • PAN will be dispatched within 15 days.

Lost PAN card?

If you have lost your PAN card, not to worry. Apply for a duplicate PAN card online or offline. Login on to NSDL or UTIITSL website, Fill the form 49-A for Indian citizen or Form 49-AA in case of a foreigner and make the payment online for a duplicate copy of your PAN card. The PAN will be dispatched within 45 days.

Do’s and Don’ts for Filling up PAN update Form

  • The form must be filled using only capital letters
  • Fill in all the fields for updating
  • Mobile number is compulsory for any updates to take place
  • Fill the form in English and the local language used at the time of enrolment
  • Make sure the form is filled only with current and relevant details
  • Names must not have salutations such as Mr / Mrs / Ms / Dr
  • Make sure that the full and complete address is filled for the PAN to be dispatched to the address
  • Enter name clearly with signature or thumbprints when self-attesting supporting documents
  • Attach relevant documents that support the required update only
  • Incorrect information and lack of support documents will cause the application to be rejected


​Structure of PAN Card

PAN card contains information such as an identity, age proof and also complies with the Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines.

PAN card details are as follows:

  • Name of the cardholder – Individual/ Company
  • Name of the father of the cardholder – Applicable for individual cardholders.
  • Date of birth – the cardholder’s date of birth in case of an individual or date of registration is mentioned in case of company or firm.
  • PAN Number – It is a 10 letter alpha-numeric number and each character represents distinct information of the cardholder.
  • First three letters – are purely alphabetical in nature and contain three letter of the alphabet from A to Z.
  • The fourth letter – this represents the category of the taxpayer. The various entities and their respective characters are as follows:
  1. A – Association of Persons
  2. B – Body of Individuals
  3. C – Company
  4. F – Firms
  5. G – Government
  6. H – Hindu Undivided Family
  7. L – Local Authority
  8. J – Artificial Judicial Person
  9. P – Individual
  10. T – Association of Persons for a Trust
  • The fifth letter – the fifth letter is the first letter of the individual’s surname
  • Remaining letters – remaining characters are random. The first 4 characters are numbers while the last one is an alphabet.
  • Signature of the individual – PAN Card also acts as a proof of the individual’s signature required for financial transactions.
  • Photograph of the individual – PAN acts as a photo identity proof of the individual. In case of companies and firms, no photograph is present on the card.

The union budget 2019 has proposed for taxpayers to use Aadhaar instead of PAN for filing income tax returns on or after 1 September 2019. It has been proposed in the union budget 2019 that the Income-tax officer can themselves allot PAN to taxpayer filing return with Aadhaar.

PAN for e-KYC (know your customer)

PAN to Aadhaar linking is mandatory for e-KYC and verification to avail services and benefits from respective service providers.

PAN for e-KYC is a large service requirement from many service providers and has huge benefits for the end user and government as well.

Here’s why :

  • Paperless- The e-KYC process is paperless enabling a service provider do manage documents easily and efficiently.
  • Quick – PAN card holder can share information with a service provider through a secure channel within minutes, thus eliminating long waiting periods that physical documents would normally require.
  • Secure –  Information shared between user and service provider is tamper-proof digital documents sent through secured channels, thereby protecting the holder’s information. These documents cannot be forged, neither can it be used without consent of both the service provider or the PAN card holder.
  • Authorised – Information shared by e-KYC contains authenticated data making it legal and acceptable for the parties involved in the transaction.
  • Cost Friendly – The entire system is paperless and online eliminating physical movement of information making it a cost-effective and time-saving process.

How to ​Apply New or Correction of Pan Card Online ?

1. How to Apply for PAN Card?

PAN can be applied online. Further, requests for changes or correction in PAN data may also be made online. Here is how to apply for PAN Card online: Online application of PAN can be made on the NSDL website  OR UTIITSL website.


Both have been authorized by the government of India to issue the PAN or to make changes/corrections in the PAN on behalf of the Income Tax Department. The online process is the most hassle-free way of obtaining PAN. The applicant is only required to fill and submit the online application form along with online payment of the respective processing fee. Copies of required documents can then be sent by post to either NSDL or UTIITSL, for verification purposes.

2. Steps to apply for PAN online

Step 3: Mode of Payment: 


The charges for applying for PAN are Rs. 93 (excluding GST) for Indian communication address and Rs. 864 (excluding GST) for foreign communication addresses. Payment of application fee can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net banking. On successful payment, an acknowledgement will be displayed. Save this acknowledgement number.


Step 4: Documents to be sent to NSDL


Once the application and payment are accepted, the applicant must send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL. After receiving the documents, the PAN application would be processed by NSDL. Documents include one proof of identity, one proof of address and one proof of date of birth. 3. How to make Changes/corrections in PAN


If you want to make changes in the existing PAN, such as a change in name, date of birth etc., you can apply online. The procedure is almost the same as you use for new PAN, except in case of corrections in PAN, you also need to submit the documents to support the change required in PAN.

Here are the steps: Step 1: Fill out the online application form for making changes/corrections in PAN on the NSDL website.

Step 2: The charges for making changes in PAN are also Rs. 93 (excluding GST) for Indian communication address and Rs. 864 (excluding GST) for foreign communication addresses. Save and print this acknowledgement number.

Step 3: Documents to be sent to NSDL
Once the application and payment are accepted, the applicant must send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL. Only after receiving the documents the PAN application would be processed by NSDL. Documents sent should support the changes applied for in PAN. For example, a request for the difference in the applicant’s or father’s name will have to be supported with a document that will contain proof of the change of name from old to new. The documents that shall be accepted as proof in this case are:
a. For married ladies
Change of name on account of marriage – marriage certificate, marriage invitation card, publication of ‘name-change’ in the gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change, copy of passport showing husband’s name.
b. For individual applicants other than married ladies
Publication of ‘name-change’ in the gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change.
c. For companies
ROC’s certificate for the name change is required. ROC stands for Registrar of Companies, and they handle the administration and regulation of the Companies Act, 1956.
d. For partnership firms
A copy of the revised Partnership Deed
e. For other categories, registered organisations (AOP/Trust/BOI/AJP etc.)

How to Check your ​Pan Card Status Online?


1. Know your PAN Application status

This article describes the process to check application status. The following are the ways to check your PAN application status:

  • Call: You can track your PAN application status by calling the TIN call centre on 020-27218080 and providing your 15-digit acknowledgement number of the PAN application.
  • SMS service: SMS service: You can track the status of your PAN application by sending a 15-digit acknowledgement number of the PAN application to ‘57575’. You will receive an SMS with the current situation after some time.
  • Online: Online: Apart from the above, applicants can track the current status of their NSDL PAN application online.


2. Pan Card Tracking based on acknowledgement number

Step 3. Enter the acknowledgement number and click on ‘Submit’.

Step 2. Enter Name as given for the PAN application (First Name, Middle Name and Last name/Surname) (Applicants other than ‘Individuals’ should write their name in the field for Last Name/Surname only)


Step 3. Enter the date of birth/ Incorporation/ Agreement/ Partnership or Trust Deed/ Formation of Body of Individuals/ Association of Persons and click on ‘Submit’.

​Surrender of Pan Card

  • Visit the NSDL website.
  • Fill out the online form with the required details.
  • Enter the PAN number details required to be cancelled in item 11 of the form.
  • Review the form carefully and pay the required amount via credit/debit card or net banking.
  • After submitting the form, take a printout of the acknowledgement receipt.
  • Enclose the acknowledgement receipt and the dissolution deed (if the company is dissolving) and a copy of the PAN card you wish to surrender, and a covering letter stating that you want to surrender your PAN card.
  • Post the envelop at the “NSDL e-Gov at Income Tax PAN Services Unit” address along with the required necessary documents.
  • You will receive a notification once the request has been processed.

Surrender PAN Card of a Firm/Partnership Firm/Company – Offline

  • A letter to the Income Tax Officer, under whose jurisdiction the firm/company was filing its taxes, is required to be written stating that the firm/company is being dissolved, thus the PAN card is being surrendered.
  • Along with the letter, some other enclosures are also required like a copy of the deed stating that the firm/company is being dissolved, the PAN card and also an acknowledgement of the return that is being filed for the period of discontinuation.
  • The letter and other documents shall be submitted to the Income Tax Officer and retain the acknowledgement received in return.

Surrender of Pan Card in Use


It is advisable for Indian citizens not to surrender the PAN card in use since it serves as a valid identity proof. But in case of foreign nationals who are leaving India and would no more be paying taxes to Indian government, the PAN card would be of no use.Such individuals can write an application to the Income Tax Assessing Officer of their respective jurisdiction to surrender their PAN card. They need to mention the reason for surrendering the PAN card in the application. This would lead to cancellation of PAN card after which it can be surrendered to the tax officer by the holder.
