The other is an AD Code registration. Without both, you cannot clear goods through customs.

The AD Code is a 14 digit number issued by the bank where you hold your current account. Its purpose is to establish that the foreign currency moving through that account is coming and going through a legitimate channel. It is issued on the bank’s letterhead and then registered at the port.

One point that saves a lot of confusion: an AD Code registered at any single port works for customs clearance of imports and exports across India. You do not need a separate registration at every port you intend to use.

Documents required for ICEGATE registration

Have these ready before you start, because an incomplete application has to be begun again rather than resumed.

Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate with both signing and encryption. This is the item that most often holds up the process — a signing-only certificate will not work. See our digital signature certificate service.

PAN card of the organisation, self attested.

Proof of business or trade — the Import Export Code certificate and the GST registration certificate, self attested.

Bank details — a cancelled cheque or a bank statement, self attested.

PAN and Aadhaar of every stakeholder, director or partner, self attested and in colour.

PAN and Aadhaar of the authorised signatory, self attested and in colour.

Authorisation letter on the company or agency letterhead, self attested.

Email address and phone number for the organisation, which will receive every customs communication. Use an address the business controls, not an individual’s.

Additional document for AD Code registration

Bank authorisation letter for the AD Code, issued on the bank’s own letterhead. This has to be requested from your bank and is not something you can produce yourself.

Request the bank letter early. It is routinely the longest lead item in the whole exercise, and everything else waits on it.

Setting up to import or export

ICEGATE sits alongside the IEC and the AD code registration. We handle all three, and the annual IEC updation that keeps the code active. See Import Export Code, our note on annual IEC updation, and FEMA advisory. Book a call.

Procedures and thresholds change.
