It is the week spent chasing a missing interest certificate or a broker statement that nobody downloaded. This is the list we work from, arranged by the kind of income you have, so you can gather everything once.

Return filing is now governed by Section 263 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, which replaced Section 139 of the 1961 Act with effect from 1 April 2026. The documents you need have not changed much. What has changed is the section numbering you will see on notices and forms.

What everyone needs, whatever their income

PAN and Aadhaar, linked. An unlinked PAN will block the filing.

Bank account details for every account held during the year, with IFSC. Nominate one pre-validated account for the refund.

Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), downloaded from the e-filing portal.

Form 26AS, for the TDS, TCS and advance tax credits actually reflected against your PAN.

Challans for any advance tax or self-assessment tax paid.

Last year return and computation, which is what carries forward losses, brought-forward depreciation and the regime you chose.

Reconcile the AIS against your own records before you file, not after. A mismatch between what a reporting entity has told the department and what you declare is the single most common trigger for a query.

If you are salaried

Form 16 from every employer during the year. If you changed jobs, you need all of them, and the income has to be combined.

Salary slips for months not covered by a Form 16.

Rent receipts and the landlord PAN where HRA exemption is claimed and annual rent crosses the reporting threshold.

Leave travel allowance proofs, if claimed.

Form 12BB as submitted to the employer, so the return matches what was declared.

If you own house property

Home loan interest certificate from the lender, split between principal and interest.

Municipal tax paid receipts, which are deductible against let-out property.

Rent agreement and rent received records for a let-out property.

Co-owner details and the ownership share, where the property is jointly held.

For a property under construction, the completion or possession date, which governs when interest becomes claimable.

If you sold shares, mutual funds or property

Capital gains statement from the broker or the registrar, covering every transaction in the year.

Contract notes for any transaction not on the statement.

For property: the sale deed, the purchase deed, stamp duty valuation, and bills for any cost of improvement.

Cost records for pre-2001 assets, and a valuation as on 1 April 2001 where the fair market value is being substituted. See our Cost Inflation Index chart for the indexation position.

Details of any reinvestment claimed as exempt, with the deposit or purchase evidence.

If you have business or professional income

Books of account, or the summary from your accounting system, with a trial balance.

Bank statements for all business accounts for the full year.

GST returns filed during the year, which must reconcile with the turnover declared.

Fixed asset register and purchase invoices, for depreciation.

Audit report, where an audit applies.

Stock records at the start and end of the year.

If you have foreign income or assets, or you are an NRI

Passport and travel record, to establish the number of days in India and therefore residential status.

Foreign bank account details, foreign assets and any foreign entity interest, for the schedule that must be reported.

Tax residency certificate and Form 10F where treaty relief is claimed.

Foreign tax paid evidence, for foreign tax credit.

NRO and NRE account statements and TDS certificates.

Reporting of foreign assets is not optional and the consequences of omission are disproportionate to the tax involved. If any of this applies, our NRI tax filing service is the right starting point.

If you are claiming deductions under the old regime

These are only useful if you have opted for the old regime. Under the default new regime most of them are not available, so gathering them may be wasted effort. Check which regime is better for you before you start collecting.

Life insurance premium receipts, PPF and EPF statements, ELSS statements, tuition fee receipts, principal repayment on a home loan.

Health insurance premium receipts and preventive health check-up bills.

Donation receipts with the donee registration details.

Education loan interest certificate.

Home loan interest certificate where an additional deduction is claimed. See our note on Sections 80EE and 80EEA for who can still claim these.

A practical order of work

Download the AIS, TIS and Form 26AS first. They tell you what the department already knows.

List every income stream that appears there and check whether you have a document for each.

Collect the employer, bank, broker and lender certificates.

Run both regimes on the numbers before choosing.

Reconcile, then file. Verify within the time allowed, or the return is treated as never filed.

Let us file it

We handle the reconciliation, the regime comparison and the filing, and we hold the working papers so next year starts from a complete file rather than from scratch. Start at income tax filing for individuals, business tax filing for firms and companies, or NRI tax filing if you are filing from outside India.

You can upload documents securely through the TAXAJ client portal, or book a call if you want the list narrowed to your situation first.

This is a general checklist. The documents relevant to a particular return depend on your sources of income, your residential status and the regime you choose.

Everything you need before you file, arranged by source of income: salary, house property, capital gains, business, foreign income and old-regime deductions.
