It is not determined only by turnover; cash transactions, presumptive taxation and the manner in which income is declared can also affect tax-audit applicability.

For FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), tax audits continue to be reported through Form 3CA/3CB along with Form 3CD. At the same time, 2026 brings an important transition with the introduction of the new Income-tax Act, 2025 and the new Form 26 for later tax years.

Latest Tax Audit Limits in 2026

The applicable limits are:

Category Tax Audit Limit

Business Turnover exceeding ₹1 crore

Business where cash receipts & payments are within 5% Turnover exceeding ₹10 crore

Profession Gross receipts exceeding ₹50 lakh

The ₹10 crore limit is available where both cash receipts and cash payments do not exceed 5% of total receipts and total payments, respectively.

Example

Suppose a business has a turnover of ₹7 crore. If both its cash receipts and cash payments remain within the prescribed 5% limit, the business may fall under the enhanced ₹10 crore threshold.

However, if the 5% cash conditions are not satisfied, the normal ₹1 crore threshold becomes relevant.

Therefore, tax-audit applicability should never be checked only by looking at turnover.

Tax Audit for Professionals

For professionals, the general threshold remains ₹50 lakh of gross receipts.

This can apply to professionals such as doctors, lawyers, architects, engineers, accountants and consultants covered by the relevant provisions.

The ₹10 crore enhanced threshold applicable to certain businesses does not apply to professionals merely because their cash transactions are low.

Presumptive Taxation and Tax Audit

Tax audit can also become applicable in certain cases involving presumptive taxation.

For example, where a taxpayer covered by Section 44AD or other presumptive provisions declares income below the prescribed presumptive amount and the applicable conditions are triggered, the taxpayer may become liable to maintain books and get the accounts audited.

This is why a proper tax-audit review should consider turnover, cash transactions, presumptive taxation and the income actually declared.

What is Form 3CD?

Form 3CD contains the detailed particulars required to be reported by the tax auditor under Section 44AB.

For FY 2025-26 / AY 2026-27, the applicable reporting structure continues to be:

Form 3CA or Form 3CB + Form 3CD

Depending on whether the assessee’s accounts are already required to be audited under another law, the appropriate audit report is furnished along with Form 3CD.

Key Areas Covered in Form 3CD

Form 3CD requires reporting on several important areas, including:

Nature of business or profession and accounting method

Books of accounts maintained

Turnover and gross receipts

Depreciation and fixed assets

Disallowable expenses

Payments covered under provisions such as Sections 40(a), 40A(3) and 43B

TDS/TCS compliance

Loans, deposits and specified transactions

Various deductions and tax-related disclosures

In practice, the auditor may also reconcile information with financial statements, GST records, TDS returns and other supporting documents to ensure that the figures reported in Form 3CD are consistent.

Tax Audit Due Date — AY 2026-27

For FY 2025-26 / AY 2026-27, the normal due date for furnishing the tax-audit report is 30 September 2026.

Businesses should ideally complete their books, reconciliations and supporting documentation well before the audit-report deadline rather than treating the audit as a last-minute filing exercise.

Penalty for Non-Compliance

Failure to comply with the tax-audit requirement may attract penalty under Section 271B.

The penalty can be 0.5% of total sales, turnover or gross receipts, subject to a maximum of ₹1.50 lakh, subject to applicable provisions relating to reasonable cause.

Important 2026 Change — Form 3CD to Form 26

One of the biggest changes to tax-audit reporting in 2026 is the introduction of the Income-tax Act, 2025.

For FY 2025-26 / AY 2026-27, taxpayers will continue with the existing Form 3CA/3CB and Form 3CD framework.

However, for Tax Year 2026-27 onwards, the new reporting framework comes into effect and the earlier Forms 3CA, 3CB and 3CD are replaced by a unified Form 26.

The tax-audit thresholds remain broadly the same, but the reporting mechanism is being modernised and consolidated under the new framework.

Conclusion

Tax audit under Section 44AB is not simply about crossing a turnover limit. Cash transactions, presumptive taxation and several other compliance factors can determine whether an assessee is required to obtain a tax audit.

For FY 2025-26, businesses and professionals should carefully review their turnover, cash transactions, books, TDS/TCS compliance and Form 3CD disclosures.

At the same time, tax professionals should be prepared for the shift to Form 26 from Tax Year 2026-27, making 2026 an important year of transition in tax-audit reporting.

A timely review of tax-audit applicability can help businesses identify compliance gaps early and avoid unnecessary last-minute issues.

Tax audit is an important compliance requirement for businesses and professionals falling within the scope of Section 44AB of the Income-tax Act.
