Income Tax Department Portal – Login, Registration & Reset Guide
It is mandatory for every taxpayer in India to be a registered user on the income tax department website. Being a registered user, one can access previous years tax returns, e-verify the income tax returns, check refund status etc.

1. Prerequisite for Individuals to Register on Income Tax Portal
Prior to registering on the income tax portal, one must ensure they have following details:
- Valid PAN
- Valid Mobile Number
- Valid Current Address
- Valid Email Address, preferably your own
Minor, lunatic or idiot and those who are barred by Indian Contract Act, 1872 are incompetent to register on the income tax portal.
2. Step-by-Step Process on Registering on the Income Tax Department Website
Step 1: Visit the income tax department portal
On the homepage of the government portal, click on ‘Register Yourself’ on the right hand side of the page.
Step 2: Select the User Type
Once you have clicked on that button, you will be taken to a registration form that will ask you to select your user type.
Step 3: Enter the Basic Details
Step 4: Fill in the Registration Form
The following details in the registration form are mandatory:
- Password details
- Contact details
- Current address
After correctly entering all the details, click on submit.
Step 5: Verification
On submitting the duly filled form, a six digit One Time Password (OTP) is sent to your mobile number and the email ID provided. Enter this OTP correctly to successfully verify the details. Please note that in case of non-residents the OTP is only sent on the registered email address.
The OTP will expire after 24 hours from the actual time of receipt. In case one fails to complete the registration process within the given 24 hours, the entire registration must be initiated again.
3. Income Tax Department E-filing Login
Step 1: Visit the income tax department homepage
To access the Indian income tax login page, visit the homepage of government portal. Here, you will see a box on the right side that has a ‘Login Here’ button for registered users.
Step 2: Enter the Details
Once you have clicked on that button, you will be taken to the login page where you have to enter your income tax login username and password.
Please note, for Income Tax Login, the User ID is your PAN Card Number.

Here’s How to Retrieve Your Income Tax Login Credentials –
E-filing of ITR is a one-time task in a whole financial year. So, it is natural to forget your login credentials for the same. Taxpayers find it difficult to access their accounts without any guide to retrieve the income tax login password and user ID. Here is a step by step procedure on how you can recover your income tax credentials.
Access the income tax department portal.
Once you go to the home page from above link, you will find a “Login Here” button on the right side.
Once you click the “Login Here” button and enter the login page , click on the “Forgot Password” button in the third last line of the dialog box. It will lead you to the page below.
Fill in the User ID and Captcha Code appearing there and continue.
a. The User ID is your PAN
b. If the taxpayer is visually challenged, he/she can request for OTP instead of image captcha.
Once you provide your User ID and captcha code, you will be directed to “Reset Password” dialog box where you will select any one option from the drop-down list and provide mandatory details.
The drop-down list has the following:
a) Answer Secret Question
b) Upload DSC
c) Using OTP
d) Using Aadhaar OTP
Option 1 :
The taxpayer has to answer the primary and secondary secret questions which he had answered at the time of registration. OR
Option 2 :
The taxpayer can use his unique registered digital signature(DSC) and login to his e-filing account. OR
Option 3 :
The taxpayer can use OTP (One time password) sent to the registered mobile number and email ID and change the password.
Option 4 :
If the taxpayer wants to change the registered email id and mobile number and then try to access his income tax department portal, he can do the same but with an extra detail among anyone of the following three :
1. TDS/TCS Deduction Details of last 2 assessment years
2. Tax Payment Details – BSR code, Challan Date, and Challan Sequence Number if any tax was paid during last 3 Assessment years
3. Bank Account Number mentioned in last year income tax return.
The taxpayer can also access his income tax department portal by entering the Aadhaar OTP sent to the registered mobile number and email id with UIDAI.
If a taxpayer has opted for Option 4 with new email id and new mobile number , he will have to wait for 12 hours to access the portal. This is one of the measures of the income tax department to stop any fraudulent login They also send one confirmation mail to the previously registered email id with the direction to report in case the taxpayer is not aware about the portal being assessed by any other person.
Once the taxpayer has used any of the above options to retrieve his password, he will get access to his income tax department portal. Further from the portal directly, he can easily change the password or other details easily.
